Diverse minds shaping the future of Data Centres: Insights from TechEx Global's All-female AI panel

Back to Market Insights

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending Techex Global, and something about the experience really stuck with me. I sat in on a panel discussion called 'Innovation of the Future of Co-location in the AI Era and AI Hyperscalers Data Centre Design,' hosted by the insightful Susanna Kass. While the technical stuff was fascinating (as expected), what really got to me – and what I found most inspiring – was the fact that the panel was all-female.

In a field that’s often seen as male-dominated, seeing these incredible women in top roles was incredibly empowering. The panel featured Leanne Starace, Senior VP at Equinix; Dame Dawn Childs, CEO at PureDC; and Yasmine Rifai, CTO at Microsoft. Their leadership and insights painted a picture of a future where innovation, sustainability, and diverse talent aren’t just nice-to-haves – they’re at the heart of what will drive the industry forward.

The conversation flowed in so many directions, but what stood out to me was their emphasis on getting young talent, especially young women, to enter this exciting and ever-evolving market.

It resonated deeply with me, especially as someone who's constantly working to address the candidate shortage in the data centre sector. The need to nurture the next generation of talent is something we all need to take seriously.

I also couldn't help but reflect on the importance of designing flexible, adaptable data centres in this era of AI adoption. As a recruiter in this space, I see firsthand how securing the right talent to keep up with the pace of change is just as crucial as the technology itself. Without the right people, no amount of innovation will matter.

Beyond just talent, the discussion also touched on the urgency of 'speed to market' in an AI-driven world, alongside the need to stay focused on sustainability and cutting carbon footprints. As tech scales at an incredible rate, we must also think about its impact on the planet.

One of the quotes from Yasmine Rifai that really stuck with me was: 'The difference between successful and unsuccessful people is their mindset,' and 'Your mind is the tool to propel yourself forward.'

These aren’t just inspirational quotes; they’re real truths, especially for women trying to navigate and lead in technical fields. It reminded me that our internal drive, our belief in ourselves, and our willingness to learn and adapt are our greatest assets.

As a female recruiter in the data centre industry, working through the ongoing candidate shortage, this panel wasn’t just another industry talk. It was a huge source of inspiration.

It reminded me of the incredible potential in this field and how essential diverse perspectives are for driving innovation. Seeing these leaders in action reinforced the idea that the future of data centres isn’t just about the technology – it’s about the brilliant minds, from all backgrounds, who are shaping it.

Let’s keep supporting and championing the women who are, and will continue to be, leading the way in this exciting evolution. The future is bright, and it’s being built by diverse minds.
