Last night at the House of Lords the UK government launched the Institute of Coding, a body of universities and tech leaders to tackle the digital skills gap. The aim of the institute is to unite the tech industry with academics to spread digital skills training across the country and boost equality and diversity in the tech sector.

When the system lets you down and kicks you out of the building: A cautionary tale about the human-machine relationship. In a strange series of events, an employee working in LA was ‘let go’ from his job following decisions made by a machine. It started with the employee’s office key card declining and not being able to log into his computer systems to being forcibly escorted from the building by security.

New report reveals Kotlin as a serious contender for Java

Java has always continued to dominate the programming language space but according to the latest Skills Up report Kotlin, a statically typed programming language developed by JetBrains, may soon knock java off the top spot for mobile development. The report surveyed more than 8,000 developers and technology experts in four broad categories: app development, web development, security and systems admin and data.

Instagram celebrates its 1 billion user mark with the launch of YouTube rival IGTV, which allows users to now upload long-form videos. On the launch of the new feature, Instagram founder announced “Instagram has always been a place to connect with the people who inspire, educate and entertain you every day. With your help, IGTV begins a new chapter of video on Instagram. We hope it brings you closer to the people and things you love.”

YouTube expands its music and video services to the UKYouTube expands its music and video services to the UK

At a London press conference, YouTube has announced it will be expanding the subscription of its services to the UK and 11 other countries. In time the plan is to replace the existing Google Play Music app, and could be a “legitimate challenger” to Apple and Spotify music offerings.
