Game-changing technology development in British AI technology

Canadian soldiers on the streets of Montreal tested the newest British autonomous technology able to scour urban environments for enemy advances. This technology, developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and UK industry partners, known as SAPIENT, saw British sensors making autonomous decisions. The SAPIENT tech takes that load off the soldier and reduces the risk of human error, as well as reducing troops in the operations room – freeing them up for other military activity.

Smart home technologies providing home securitySmart home technologies providing home security

Amazon and ADT announced an integration between their audio technology and security services, so that when an Amazon Echo detects specific sounds, push notifications will be sent to homeowners’ smartphones. Smart sensor company Notion also announced a partnership with Hippo Insurance. The idea is that IoT sensors can better detect incidents like water leak and unlawful intrusion, and prevent even worse damages from occurring. In addition to smoke, fire or carbon monoxide alerts, the ability to send medical alerts automatically to have an ambulance respond and the ability to turn on/off home lights, are also some of the smart features most valued by insurance customers, says Parks Associates.

Increased demand in smart home security products in the UKIncreased demand in smart home security products in the UK

Smart home awareness is growing in the UK. Up to 75% of consumers in the UK own a smart home device or are considering a purchase. According to the latest surveys, the biggest benefit of smart home technology is security and peace of mind (37%), followed by making life easier. However, just 17% of the surveyed own home security equipment, showing that there is still room for growth. Among those that have already owned smart home products, the survey shows that on average, each person owns 2.5 products, and £156.45 (about US$203) is spent per household in the past year.

The latest report by Marketsandmarkets predicts that the cybersecurity market will grow from USD 152.71 billion in 2018 to USD 248.26 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period. The major forces driving the cyber security market growth are factors such as strict data protection directives and rising cyber terrorism and the market is growing rapidly due to the rising need for cloud-based cybersecurity solutions among SMEs. The healthcare industry vertical is expected to grow at the highest CAGR from 2018 to 2023.

According to the 2018 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, today 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. It necessitates the need to utilize city space more effectively. “In multi-family houses you have some private areas like your apartment but you share common areas such as the entrance hall, cleaning rooms and training facilities; on top of that you have people moving in and out of the building as well as the need to allow non-residents access to some places while restricting access to others.”
