The UK Government consulting on drone use and safety enforcement inour latest Fire & Security weekly news & jobsSuggestions include a minimum age for drone pilots; 1km restrictions near protected aerodromes (compared with a 400ft height and flying restriction near aerodromes restrictions that came into force on July 30); operators of small drones of a mass between 250g and 20kg inclusive to have to register; and pilots to meet ‘competence requirements’. Additionally, the Government thinks, that the vast majority of drone users breaking the rules are unaware of the law and are doing so unintentionally’. Hence the regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ‘Dronecode’ safety awareness campaign, described as ‘a simple set of rules’ to raise awareness of the law with drone users, commercial and recreational.

Facial recognition controversies

Access control jobs and latest news: Facial recognition controversies in our Fire & Secuirty weekly newsAlthough facial recognition technology has made great strides in recent decades, performance remains uneven. There have been several other high-profile controversies over AI-driven platforms – many related to racial or gender bias. Amazon’s facial recognition software erroneously flagged 28 members of Congress as having been arrested for crimes during tests run by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The retail giant’s Rekognition platform also disproportionately misidentified people of colour in a database of mugshots. People of colour who were falsely identified accounted for 40% of the wrongly-matched faces – 11 of 28 – even though they make up only 20% of US Congress.

According to the latest Terrorism Frequency Report by Pool Re, as the barriers for individuals and groups to acquiring material and knowledge to undertake terrorist attacks continue to recede, the private sector must step up and improve its own protective security measures. The report describes intelligence gathering, risk assessment, training, and exercises, internally and with emergency and security services. The report concludes that the UK official 2018 CONTEST policy assesses that the threat from Islamist terrorism will remain at its current level for two years at least, and that the threat from extreme right wing terrorism is growing.
