Bitcoin flies past $5,000 as it hits all-time high Bitcoin flies past $5,000 as it hits all-time high

Bitcoin has risen in value, smashing past the $5,000 mark and reaching an all-time high. According to Coin Desk’s Bitcoin Price Index (BPI), the digital currency was trading at $5,161 soon after 11:00 UTC, representing a 6.8% increase from yesterday’s opening price of $4,830.77 and at press time it had risen to $5,205.65. Renowned for its volatility, the cryptocurrency has risen in value by approximately 750% over the past 12 months – and is now worth four times as much as an ounce of gold.

Microsoft has announced a new partnership with Amazon to create an open source deep learning library called Gluon. The idea behind this new partnership is to make artificial intelligence more accessible and valuable. According to Microsoft, the library simplifies the process of making deep learning models and will enable developers to run multiple deep learning libraries. Gluon supports symbolic and imperative programming which is something not supported by many other toolkits, Microsoft explained.

The impact of Brexit on the technology sector as it loses access to a pool of talent from Europe could be less severe than previously expected. Figures from an in-depth report from Tech City UK, analysing the make-up of the 1.7m strong digital workforce reveals that foreign workers are more likely to be from outside the EU. Of the 13 percent in the industry not from the UK, just over half are from outside of the EU, and in London foreign workers from outside the EU accounted for 20% of the workforce, while those from within accounted for 11 percent.

Oracle announces a new automated database that can patch cybersecurity flaws itself

In his first keynote speech at the Oracle OpenWorld conference, Larry Ellison CEO of Oracle announced a new autonomous database that can patch itself from cybersecurity flaws without having to go offline. The automated database, called Oracle 18c, can instantly patch itself which still running. This is a huge advantage over current systems, where humans have to schedule downtime for a database.
