Recruiter Biography:

In the early days of my career I ran an on-line business specialising in car parts. In my early twenties I started my career as a Recruitment Consultant in the IT Technical sector, moving into the Fire & Security shortly after. This is now my 8th Year in recruitment, leading the Eligo Fire & Security recruitment team.

I launched Eligo Fire & Security in 2010 and it has since become one of the best known brands in the market, with a team of 5 consultants which continues to grow.

As a leading Fire & Security Recruiter, I regularly attend industry networking events, and have been involved in placing over 500 people within the sector, working at all levels with a number of key clients since 2010 and some even earlier. In 2014 I was named as one of the 20 most influential people in the Fire industry and nominated as Security recruitment consultancy of the year in 2013.

hiring a superstar is easy - have a conversation with your recruiter

What does a typical conversation with a recruiter usually sound like to you? A couple of days ago I was having a conversation with a potential new client who was looking to hire following the exit of a long term employee. They had since hired someone else but that had unfortunately not worked out. In pursuit of a better hire the Director had gone out to their own personal network with no joy; candidates were not hungry enough, too stuck in their ways, and had unrealistic expectations. What he wanted was someone who was still improving in their abilities, driven, hungry, motivated to open new doors, open-minded to new ideas and able to learn yet have significant experience selling...

First up, we have Fire & Security Recruitment Director John Guest. Happy Reading!   One of my new year’s resolutions last year was to read more, and since I haven’t looked back. farmer fire & security business

I regularly catch up with Directors and Managers of Fire & Security businesses throughout the UK to discuss industry trends, challenges and needs, and potential solutions to help them grow. Recently I met the Managing Director of a small but growing Security business whose goal has been to add £1 million revenue to the business within a 12 month period. Unfortunately, over the last year, that goal had been and gone following a period in which the company had hired 2 Business Development Managers in order to achieve these results. One year on and the company were behind on budget, the Business Dev Managers were gone and the Managing Director was having to go back out, sell, and...

fire & security technical sales

Earlier this week I met with the MD of a small but growing Fire & Security business to discuss how we can help them to improve their hiring, on boarding, retention, and ultimately the results that they are producing. During our conversation the topic of what is more important to look for in a sales hire came up; do you look for attitude and habits or product knowledge?   Whilst we discussed the topic at length, agreeing that the main qualities sales people need to have included the right habits, behaviours, and attitude to get out there every day and win the business, the discussion around product knowledge continued.   Does having product knowledge give a sales...

attracting the best candidates

The recruitment landscape has shifted considerably over the last 2-3 years and the best candidates hold more power than ever before. Sadly, most companies are still using the same attraction materials and job adverts that were useful when there were plenty of relevant applications and you needed a way of screening people out before applying. As I discussed in my article on hiring the best security professionals out there, the reality is that the best security professionals are either secure in their current role but open to something better, or they are in transition and have multiple opportunities to consider. As such, you need to offer something different and/or better to get the...
