Today marks International Women’s Day, celebrating the achievements of women and calling for greater gender equality throughout the world. Observed since the early 1900’s when women in many countries still did not have full voting rights, this year’s theme is “Make It Happen” encouraging action for advancing and recognising all women.
Though gender equality has come on a great deal since then, it is still a major challenge across all areas of life, with much work still to do.
You may have seen recent campaigns including the HeforShe Campaign, a global movement of men supporting gender equality, supported by celebrities such as Emma Watson, Steve Carell, and David Tennant, whilst Richard Branson (CEO of Virgin), Paul Polman (CEO of Unilever), and Francois-Henri Pinault (CEO of Kering) penned a thought provoking piece recently on Women in the Workplace and what Business Leaders can do.
Though there are many women who are successful in business, when wider evidence is looked at, the facts are damning. Just 12% of companies globally have female CEOs, whilst despite a greater increase in women graduating from University, more than 70% of graduates hired are men.
Despite this, whilst it is not only the right thing to do, the business case for greater diversity within the workplace, has never been clearer. Research conducted by Grant Thornton and Goldman Sachs found that “companies with the highest representation of women in management positions delivered 34% greater returns to shareholders than their counterparts with lower representation, [whilst] if the female employment rate in the developed world rose to match that of men, the overall level of GDP of a country could be boosted by over 12%”
By 2020, 865 million women are predicted to enter the workforce, it is crucial that as businesses and business leaders, we celebrate culture, diversity, and gender at all levels, driving creativity, innovation, and results.
