Intersec 2018 – summary

Intersec concluded its 20th edition in Dubai on 23rd January. 29,532 visitors from 129 countries attended the world’s leading trade fair for security, safety, and fire protection featuring 1,337 exhibitors from 59 countries. Sharing center-stage were dozens of product launches, while live demonstrations of fire protection equipment and drones used across a wide range of applications kept thousands of buyers and industry professionals entertained and informed. The latest trends in artificial intelligence and robotics in policing societies, along with major projects fuelling growth in the Middle East commercial security landscape, were among many talking points.

Physical security market’s growth

Fire & Security Industry Jobs and news: CCTV, Access Control & Intruder alarms: The Global Market for Physical Security Products Market is growingFor the last two years, access control has achieved a higher rate of growth than either video surveillance or intruder alarms, and this is forecast to continue or improve slightly in 2018. The total value of physical security products at factory gate prices was just over $29bn, an increase of around 5% compared to 2016. Access control has maintained its average annual growth of 7% over the last three years, and now accounts for 24% of the total market. The world market for video surveillance products grew by nearly 6% compared to 2016, standing at almost $16bn in 2017. The growth rate has slowed – over the previous five years it had averaged almost 10% a year – but it’s still higher than many had feared.

Face ID vs fingerprint

access control/Electronic security jobsAccording to the IHS Markit latest report, the fingerprint sensors market is facing a major disruption following the introduction of Face ID, a facial recognition system designed and developed by Apple Inc. Smartphone face ID means that more than 1 billion fewer fingerprint sensors will be shipped from 2017 to 2021. Over the next two-to-three years, the fingerprint sensor market is likely moving toward a true “in-display” solution, where the sensor is not just under the display, but also integrated into the display itself. These sensors will likely be able to recognise fingerprints in a large area of the display or even the entire display, rather than solely on a fingerprint-sensor button.

Government to finance cladding replacements?

fire alarm & fire protection news and jobs by our fire recruitment consultantsThe government should provide interest-free loans for the purpose of replacing flammable cladding, the head of a property managers group has said. Cladding samples taken from 228 buildings have since failed fire safety tests. Seven months on from the Grenfell tragedy, only three tower blocks have replaced cladding that failed flammability tests. Some 160 social housing buildings were included in the figures, 57 of which have begun the removal of cladding. “But the issue here – which for me is more important – is time, because while everybody is talking about the legal costs and who should pay, people are living in dangerous buildings”.
