how to get hired

Have you ever wondered what the key stages that take place during a hiring process are, what companies are looking for in a candidate, and ultimately how to get hired? Last week, Eligo were fortunate to host the internal recruiter from one of Europe’s leading technology groups to answer each of these questions and provide further insight into what goes on inside a major company during the hiring process. Emphasising key points made in our previous blogs on effective hiring processes to reduce staff turnover and increase the quality of hire as well as how to attract the best candidates , the move into 21st century recruitment was clear throughout. This broadly covers 3 areas of...

Perl is alive at YAPC:EU Eligo

Yet another Rick Talks and Yet another Perl Conference... and what a Perl conference it was! Now back in the office following YAPC::EU which this year took place in Granada, Spain, I thought I'd share my reflections on what was another successful and thoroughly enjoyable Perl conference demonstrating the strength of the Perl Community and how Perl refuses to die. YAPC:EU demonstrated that in fact Perl is alive and kicking! Preparing to leave for the airport, the lovely Aleks and I packed our infamous pink stand in tow ready to meet new friends and old. Arriving in Granada late Tuesday evening we sadly missed what turned out to be one of the highlights of the conference: The Eligo...

recruitment costs graph

Do you know how much your company loses from the departure of an employee? Do you know the recruitment costs to hire a replacement? How about the recruitment cost of hiring the wrong replacement? Calculating these costs isn’t simple; you have to look at a number of factors including reduced productivity, angry customers, and lost investment. Of course these aren’t specifically monetary values either. Regardless, these headaches can eventually prove costly both in time and expense. This is especially true in the hiring of a wrong candidate in the market I specialise in – Fire & Security Recruitment – where there is currently a large skills shortage.  Wrong decisions can...

How to answer STAR interview question

The STAR interview format is often used by employers who hold structured competency based interviews but understanding STAR can help you be the STAR in any interview.  So first things first . . . what is STAR? Situation Task Action Result This format is a universally recognised technique for assessing responses in an interview setting.  Some interviewers use STAR to score you based on how well you communicate your answer across each element of STAR. They do not always disclose that they are using this technique, in which case you could be losing ‘points’ without knowing. More forgiving interviewers give you advance warning of a competency based interview, in which...

Rick Talks Your Perl Career

Rick Talks has been going global over the last few weeks, as myself and my colleague, Aleks, attended NLPW15: The Dutch Perl Workshop in Utrecht. The Perl workshop consisted of a day of presentations for users of Perl, welcoming Perl Mongers from all over Europe, providing a great opportunity for all involved to discuss Perl, it’s latest additions and day-to-day issues, as well as furthering their respective Perl careers. In respect of this, I was proud to be asked to give a Rick Talks presentation on standing out as a Perl Developer, aiding the many developers in attendance to further or gain entry into their perfect Perl career. In particular, the talk focussed on interviewing for...
