all you need to know about Perl 6

The annual London Perl Workshop took place on Saturday, gracing us with the theme of a Perl Christmas. The event was dedicated to a special arrival underneath the Christmas tree this year: the arrival of Perl 6! With that in mind, we asked experienced Perl Programmer and regular contributor at events such as YAPC, LPW, the Dutch Perl Workshop, and more, Steve Mynott, some questions on the introduction of Perl 6 and the key points you need to know about its release. How is Perl 6 different from Perl 5? Perl 6 is a different computer language to Perl 5 but a member of the same Perl family of languages sharing the same original author Larry Wall.  They are similar in many ways; both are...

London Perl Mongers at Eligo

Last night, Eligo were proud to host the London Perl Mongers November meet-up at our Wimbledon offices. Unable to find a location for their Perl Monger meet-up, we were more than happy to host, with it proving to be a great night for all! With Perl mongers travelling from all over London including attendees from as far afield as Hackney, it was great to see such a healthy attendance. The meet-up included a wide range of talks, providing both insight and laughs! With a couple of last minute changes to the speaking roster, we were delighted to hear speakers discuss topics ranging from Open Source Security and HTTP Cookies, to Programming Taboos Illustrated, Electronics, and a feature on...

employer brand attracting developers company branding

You’re a great company, really, you are. You should be attracting some excellent talent; sure, there’s a shortage of developers, particularly Perl, Ruby, Java etc., but that’s all the more reason why the talent that there is should be working for you. So you’re not quite Google, or Facebook, or [insert one of any other well-known tech brand's here], maybe you are: it’s still possible. Read any advice on attracting talent and, you’ll be told the first step is to look at your employer brand, and it is, as long as you understand that this is more than your logo, a foosball table in the office, or even free fruit on Fridays. Looking at your employer brand requires you to step...

Developer Recruitment

Download our Developer CV Template here! As specialists in open source development recruitment we often get asked by our candidates, “How can I stand out to get the developer job I want”? I always explain that the best place to start is to think of yourself as a brand that you are marketing. To do this, ask yourself some key questions –  What sort of reputation do I have in the industry? What do I offer in terms of expertise? What are my strengths? What am I passionate about? What are my aspirations for the future? How do I want to be known? The answers to all of these will give you an idea as to the nature of your own personal brand. You then need to ask...

This broadly covers 3 areas of...

Perl is alive at YAPC:EU Eligo

Yet another Rick Talks and Yet another Perl Conference... and what a Perl conference it was! Now back in the office following YAPC::EU which this year took place in Granada, Spain, I thought I'd share my reflections on what was another successful and thoroughly enjoyable Perl conference demonstrating the strength of the Perl Community and how Perl refuses to die. YAPC:EU demonstrated that in fact Perl is alive and kicking! Preparing to leave for the airport, the lovely Aleks and I packed our infamous pink stand in tow ready to meet new friends and old. Arriving in Granada late Tuesday evening we sadly missed what turned out to be one of the highlights of the conference: The Eligo...

recruitment costs graph

Do you know how much your company loses from the departure of an employee? Do you know the recruitment costs to hire a replacement? How about the recruitment cost of hiring the wrong replacement? Calculating these costs isn’t simple; you have to look at a number of factors including reduced productivity, angry customers, and lost investment. Of course these aren’t specifically monetary values either. Regardless, these headaches can eventually prove costly both in time and expense. This is especially true in the hiring of a wrong candidate in the market I specialise in – Fire & Security Recruitment – where there is currently a large skills shortage.  Wrong decisions can...

How to answer STAR interview question

The STAR interview format is often used by employers who hold structured competency based interviews but understanding STAR can help you be the STAR in any interview.  So first things first . . . what is STAR? Situation Task Action Result This format is a universally recognised technique for assessing responses in an interview setting.  Some interviewers use STAR to score you based on how well you communicate your answer across each element of STAR. They do not always disclose that they are using this technique, in which case you could be losing ‘points’ without knowing. More forgiving interviewers give you advance warning of a competency based interview, in which...
